What Will The 2020 Ford Explorer Look Like – Redesign Details

A big redesign is happening on the 2020 Ford Explorer. Well, it is about time. After the facelift in 2015, the mid-size crossover SUV will present some serious changes, for the first time after the vehicle entered the fifth generation in 2010. This will include new colors outside and inside, LED lighting, and a revisit of the front fascia. However, the most important update is on the hybrid engine. First, the police interceptor version is going to get such a powertrain. Shortly after Ford will launch Explorer Hybrid for civilians.

The concept for the new 2020 Ford Explorer includes many options and trim levels. Buyers will be able to purchase Sport ST version with a new setup. The Platinum trim level remains the top-notch choice. The hybrid model now has an advantage over the 2020 Explorer diesel variant. But, we won’t write off the chances for this powertrain either. Finally, the Sport Trac package could finally make it to production.

2020 Ford Explorer Specs

There will be four setups available for civilians. The police interceptor model is going to use a hybrid drivetrain with rear-wheel drive. But, in salons, we will find 2020 Ford Explorer with a 3.3-liter V6 motor as the base choice. It replaces a 3.5-liter V-6 unit that was capable to produce 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. The power output of the new engine is the same, but it adds 10 more pound-feet. Also, the fuel economy of the smaller displacement should get an improvement.

Another option is a 2.3-liter turbo-four engine. This one is a part of the current lineup. It is capable to create 280 ponies and 310 pound-feet of torque. With this drivetrain buyers were getting a significant improvement in fuel economy, around 3 mpg compared to the outgoing 3.5-liter unit. Now, with the new drivetrain available, the advantage of a four-cylinder motor is not so big.

Last and the most powerful gasoline engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6. It is also a new unit and we will see how engineers are going to tune it. Well, we can find it on Lincoln MKZ earlier. The drivetrain was capable to produce 400 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque, making the MKZ most powerful SUV in Ford’s premium segment. Experts believe similar outputs will come from the top of the line 2020 Ford Explorer model.

Police Interceptor – 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid with Rear-Wheel Drive

The fourth engine option for the upcoming crossover SUV is hybrid. The system will attach electric motors to a 3.3-liter V6 engine. In the beginning, the drivetrain is going to be available only for police forces. However, civilians will see it is salons not too long after law enforcement start to use it. Well, the 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid at dealerships are not coming with the same setup. A downgrade is certain, but we still don’t know exact details and specs. The only official info is that significant mileage improvement is on the way, but exact numbers are not available yet.

The 2020 Ford Explorer is going to use a rear-wheel drive setup. Most police vehicles are using RWD instead of FWD because of the better balance. The other advantage is cheaper maintenance. Of course, the main downside is a ride in wet conditions. Traction is taking a heavy damage in such situations.

2020 Ford Explorer Diesel

A diesel engine is still an option. Well, fans of such drivetrain are waiting for it for some while. But, with the attention drawn with the new F-150 diesel truck, other vehicles could benefit from it. One of them is 2020 Ford Explorer Diesel SUV. If we compare drivetrain lineup, we will see there are other engines both under Explorer’s and F-150’s hood. So, the crossover SUV could borrow a diesel unit coming for a pickup truck. It is a 3.0-liter Powerstroke that will deliver 250 hp and 420 lb-ft of twist. It perfectly fits for a higher trim level 2020 Explorer diesel.

2020 Ford Explorer Concept Rendering and Spy Shots

There are no many spy photos of the new 2020 Explorer at this moment. All we can find is a police interceptor test mule Well, this SUV can show us what to expect from the upcoming civilian model, but it is definitely tuned for police needs. So, although it is almost naked, it can’t help us figure out what will the 2020 Ford Explorer look like.

For the cop car Ford is bringing special upgrades. Well, the SUV is going to use the same LED lamps as the model we will be able to buy. Besides that, the cop model is using ballistic doors and more protection for impact from the back side. Of course, there is a special police equipment and computers inside the cabin.

2020 Ford Explorer Models – ST and Sport Trac

We will pay attention to two models in the upcoming 2020 Explorer lineup. First is confirmed. It is an ST version with the sportier setup. We believe this is the model that carries the most powerful engine – a 3.0-liter twin-turbo. With high outputs and special suspension, brakes, and exhaust, 2020 Ford Explorer ST is going to be even more attractive than the premium Platinum model.

The other possibility for the upcoming SUV is the return of 2020 Ford Explorer Sport Trac version. This model was available in the fourth generation with a huge V8 displacement. Again, a twin-turbo V6 with 400 hp can beat 390 ponies produced by the previous edition. The 2020 Ford Explorer Sport Trac would get a special appearance package with 21-inch wheels and unique colors. Also, the interior could present special features and systems. It is possible to see the Sport Trac with a diesel engine as well.

2020 Ford Explorer Debut and Release Date

It seems like the first 2020 Ford Explorer we will see is going to be the police interceptor version. However, the production model for dealerships won’t wait for too long. We could see both models’ debuts by the end of the first quarter of 2019. Appearances in salons will be in the last part of the year. Pricing is still unknown, so we expect first hints when at the premiere.
